Cartoon: My Better Angel is a Tabby – Industrial Worker

Editors note: This is the tenth issue in the “Pacey Pratt the Sabo Cat” series.

A twelve-panel comic strip entitled “Pacey Pratt the Sabo Cat in My Better Angel is a Tabby”

In the first panel six workers in coveralls are seated around a table in a diner drinking coffee, Mattie, Hunter, Nat, Cade, Bella, and Daniela. Mattie says “Until now I had no idea we all get paid different for the same work! They pay me 17.50 an hour—”

“And me 17.50—” says Hunter.

“Me 16.50,” says Nat.

“15.00,” says Cade.

“14.50,” says Bella.

“14 flat,” says Daniela.

In the second panel Daniela slams her fist on the table and says “Dude, what the fuck?”

In the third panel the workers are walking up to their job at the Auto Lube.

Cade says “We’ll march on the boss as a union and demand we all get twenty bucks an hour!”

“But how do we know you’ll stick with us” says Daniela to Hunter. “The boss will say he can’t pay us all, but some can get a little more.”

Hunter turns to her and says “I’d never accept it!”

In panel four the boss appears with a pop as a devil on Hunter’s shoulder. He grabs Hunters ear and says “Be reasonable—giving everyone a raise will put us all out of business.” Hunter wears a shocked expression.

The boss continues “They think you have it so easy, but they don’t know the pressures you’re under. Let’s make a deal!”

In panel five Pacey Pratt appears as an angel, with another pop, on Hunter’s other shoulder. The boss devil points to him across Hunter’s face and exclaims “It’s Pacey Pratt—the Sabo Cat!”

Hunter looks charmed as the Pacey Angel says “Here’s a question fellow worker—why is the boss race-baiting you?”

In panel six Hunter looks pained as he says to the Pacey angel “I know he wants to wreck our union, but if the shop goes under, we all lose.”

The Pacey angel has pulled out a harp and says “It seems like the company can always afford the boss’ salaries.”

In panel seven Hunter eyeballs the boss devil and says “They do pay this guy a lot to sit on his ass all day.”

The Pacey angle peers over Hunter’s shoulder and asks “so why does the union really scare them?” Meanwhile the boss devil stands in the foreground with his fist up, looking mad.

In panel eight the boss devil sticks his finger in Hunter’s face and says “Don’t flatter yourself you wobblie scumbag, I’m not afraid of a few entitled grease monkeys.”

Hunter’s brow furrows as he replies “You only kiss up to me because you know if the union sticks together we can make you pay what we demand.”

The Pacey angel is in the foreground now, raising their hands to their face and calling “Wobblies, organize!”

In panel nine the boss devil turns to walk away from Hunter saying “Ahh forget it!” as the workers appear as a group of angels on Hunter’s shoulder with a series of pops. The Daniela angel has her arm outstretched towards the boss devil.

In panel ten the boss devil flees, running from the angel workers who fly after him through the workshop. “Boss, come back!” says Cade.

“You said we were a family!” says Daniela.

“You said your door was always open!” says Nat.

“Help, police!” shouts the boss devil. “I think I’m being marched upon!”

In panel eleven the boss devil runs out the back of the workshop to where a fissure has opened up in the ground. Flames leap from the fissure and a sign points down into it reading “Hell 666”.

The boss devil says “So long, suckers!” as he dives into the hole, with the worker angels right behind him. Daniela seems to be smirking.

In the final panel the boss is in hell, surrounded by deep caverns and flames rising from molten rocks. He tears at his horns and looks anguished as he is surrounded by the pointing fingers of the workers. “We want a pay raise!” demands one.

“And sick days!” demands another.

“Control of the schedule!”

“And dental!”

The boss devil screams “they want the world!”

In the foreground, Pacey Pratt addresses the reader directly. “When fellow workers stick together, we can really give ‘em hell.”
